ARTICLE: SESAC 2010 Nashville Music Awards

SESAC, the nation’s fastest growing performing rights organization, awarded Hillary Scott with top honors at the “SESAC Nashville Music Awards” when she was named Songwriter of the Year at the event which was held November 8, at SESAC’s Music Row offices. Scott, a member of platinum-selling group Lady Antebellum, also took home the trophy for Song Of The Year for the smash, “Need You Now” which has dominated the charts and ruled the country and pop airwaves.
Publisher of the Year honors went to EMI Foray Music.

Scott was feted for her astonishing array of hits by Lady Antebellum over the last year including the aforementioned “Need You Now,” “Our Kind Of Love” and “Run To You.” In just a few short years, Scott and Lady A have become one of music’s most successful and celebrated acts with multiple No. 1 smashes and a multitude of CMA, ACM, CMT and Grammy awards. Scott and her fellow Lady Antebellum members Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood were in attendance and performed a sterling version of their single release, “Need You Now,” the award-winning song.

Per tradition, SESAC recognized the major impact and growing relevance of the Americana format during the evening's festivities, handing out awards to several top artists and songwriters in the genre. SESAC, the only performing rights organization that honors the Americana genre at their songwriting events, honored the work from such luminaries as Bob Dylan, Jim Lauderdale, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Allison Moorer and The Avett Brothers among many others.

Revered singer/songwriter/producer Buddy Miller, with help from Byron House, mesmerizes the crowd with his version of “King Of Broken Hearts” during the Jim Lauderdale “Inspiration Award’ presentation

Renowned singer/songwriter Jim Lauderdale was presented with SESAC’s “Inspiration Award” recognizing his timeless and genre-defying music which has resulted in collaborations with a diverse group of artists including Elvis Costello, Ralph Stanley and Willie Nelson among many others.  The list of artists who have cut Lauderdale’s songs include a Who’s Who of the best in music such as George Strait, Patty Loveless, George Jones, Dixie Chicks and Solomon Burke.  Both Costello and Stanley sent along video congratulations for Lauderdale who was on hand to accept the prestigious award. Revered artist/songwriter/producer Buddy Miller paid tribute to his friend and musical colleague with a moving version of Lauderdale’s “The King Of Broken Hearts”, providing for one of the many highlights of the evening.

In addition to her songwriting honors, SESAC Vice President, Tim Fink, awarded Songwriter of the Year, Hillary Scott, with a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted J-145 acoustic guitar provided by Henry Juscowitz from Gibson Guitar.

The elegant, black-tie soiree honored the writers and publishers behind the year’s biggest hits with more than 50 awards being presented to the elite group of creative talent drawing over 400 songwriters, publishers and industry professionals. The star-studded attendees included Lady Antebellum, Jim Lauderdale, Blaine Larsen, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Victoria Shaw and Gary Burr among many others.

Founded in 1930, making it the second oldest performing rights organization in the US, SESAC's repertory has diversified to include today's most popular music, including R&B, Hip-Hop, Dance, Classic Rock, Country hits, the best of Latin music, Contemporary Christian, Jazz, and TV and Film music from Hollywood's hottest composers.
